English proficiency exams are required for non-native speakers seeking university admission, immigration, or professional employment in English-speaking countries. The three dominant exams — IELTS, TOEFL, and TOEIC — serve different purposes and audiences.
The IELTS is jointly managed by the British Council, IDP, and Cambridge Assessment English. It's offered in two versions: Academic (for university admissions) and General Training (for immigration and work).
IELTS is scored on a band scale of 0-9 in each section, with an overall band that's the average of the four sections. Most universities require an overall band of 6.0-7.0. The Listening section has four recordings with 40 questions (30 minutes). Reading has three passages with 40 questions (60 minutes). Writing includes a 150-word report/letter and a 250-word essay (60 minutes). Speaking is a face-to-face interview with an examiner lasting 11-14 minutes.
The live speaking interview is one of IELTS's distinguishing features — many candidates find it more natural than TOEFL's recorded speaking responses.
The TOEFL iBT is administered by ETS and is the most widely accepted English proficiency test for U.S. and Canadian university admissions. The updated format (2023) runs under 2 hours with four sections, each scored 0-30, for a total of 0-120.
Reading presents academic passages with multiple-choice questions (35 minutes). Listening includes lectures and conversations (36 minutes). Speaking has four tasks — one independent and three integrated — with responses recorded via microphone (16 minutes). Writing has an integrated task and a "Writing for an Academic Discussion" task (29 minutes).
Most competitive U.S. universities require a TOEFL score of 90-100+, with top programs setting the bar at 100-110.
The TOEIC is designed specifically for the workplace, measuring everyday English proficiency in professional and business contexts. Unlike IELTS and TOEFL, which target academic settings, the TOEIC focuses on the language skills needed for international business communication.
The TOEIC Listening and Reading test is the most commonly taken version — a 2-hour, 200-question exam (100 Listening, 100 Reading) scored on a 10-990 scale. Listening includes photographs, question-response, conversations, and short talks. Reading covers incomplete sentences, text completion, and reading comprehension of business emails, memos, advertisements, and articles.
The TOEIC Speaking and Writing test is a separate exam testing productive language skills in a professional context — expressing opinions, proposing solutions, and writing business correspondence.
TOEIC is widely used by multinational corporations for hiring, promotion, and placement decisions. Over 14,000 organizations in 160+ countries use TOEIC scores. Many Japanese, Korean, and European companies require specific TOEIC scores for employment or advancement.
Choose based on your purpose. IELTS Academic or TOEFL for university admissions — IELTS is more common for UK, Australian, and Canadian schools; TOEFL for U.S. schools. IELTS General Training for immigration (especially to Canada, UK, and Australia). TOEIC for workplace English proficiency and corporate requirements.
For all three exams, consistent practice across all tested skills is essential. For IELTS Writing, practice the two task formats and focus on the four scoring criteria (task achievement, coherence, vocabulary, grammar). For TOEFL Speaking, practice recording yourself and listening back. For TOEIC, immerse yourself in business English — read professional correspondence, listen to business podcasts, and practice under timed conditions.
