The USMLE is a three-step examination for allopathic (MD) physicians, required for medical licensure in every U.S. state.
USMLE Step 1 tests foundational science knowledge — anatomy, biochemistry, physiology, pharmacology, pathology, microbiology, and behavioral sciences. Since transitioning to pass/fail scoring in 2022, Step 1 no longer generates a three-digit score, but passing remains mandatory. USMLE Step 2 CK has become the primary differentiator for residency applications, testing clinical science across all major disciplines through patient vignettes. USMLE Step 3 is the final licensing exam, typically taken during PGY-1, and includes a Computer-based Case Simulation (CCS) day.
The COMLEX Level 1 is the osteopathic equivalent of USMLE Step 1, covering biomedical sciences with additional emphasis on osteopathic principles and practice (OPP). COMLEX Level 2 tests clinical knowledge with an osteopathic lens, and COMLEX Level 3 evaluates clinical competence for independent practice. The PANCE (Physician Assistant National Certifying Exam) is required for initial PA certification — 300 questions covering organ systems and clinical tasks. The PANRE-LA (Physician Assistant National Recertifying Exam – Longitudinal Assessment) is the ongoing recertification pathway, delivered as quarterly question sets over a 2-year cycle rather than a single high-stakes exam. PA EOR (End of Rotation) exams are standardized assessments taken during PA clinical rotations, covering the specific content of each clinical rotation (family medicine, surgery, emergency medicine, etc.).
The ABIM (American Board of Internal Medicine) certification exam is required for board certification in internal medicine. It covers all subspecialties of internal medicine — cardiology, pulmonology, gastroenterology, nephrology, endocrinology, rheumatology, infectious disease, hematology, oncology, and general internal medicine.
The NAPLEX tests pharmacist competency in medication therapy management, patient safety, and pharmacokinetics — 250 questions over 6 hours. The MPJE (Multistate Pharmacy Jurisprudence Examination) tests federal and state-specific pharmacy law and is required alongside the NAPLEX in most states. The CPJE (California Pharmacist Jurisprudence Examination) is California's state-specific pharmacy law exam, used in place of the MPJE. The PTCE (Pharmacy Technician Certification Exam) certifies pharmacy technicians.

The NPTE (National Physical Therapy Examination) is required for physical therapist licensure. It's a 250-question exam covering the musculoskeletal, neuromuscular, cardiovascular/pulmonary, and integumentary systems, plus non-system topics like safety, professional responsibilities, and research.
The EPPP (Examination for Professional Practice in Psychology) is required for psychology licensure in all U.S. states and Canadian provinces.
