Professional licensure in engineering and architecture is a legal requirement for practicing independently in the United States. The path to licensure involves education, supervised experience, and passing rigorous examinations designed to protect public health, safety, and welfare.
The FE Civil exam is the first step toward becoming a licensed Professional Engineer. Administered by NCEES, it's a computer-based, 110-question exam taken over 5 hours and 20 minutes. The FE Civil covers mathematics, probability and statistics, ethics, engineering economics, statics, dynamics, mechanics of materials, fluid mechanics, hydraulics, structural analysis, geotechnical engineering, transportation, environmental engineering, and construction.
The FE provides access to the NCEES FE Reference Handbook during the exam — but you cannot bring your own materials. Knowing where to find formulas and how to apply them quickly is critical.
PE exams are the second and final exam for PE licensure, testing advanced engineering knowledge in a specific discipline.
The PE Mechanical exam covers HVAC and refrigeration, mechanical systems and materials, thermal and fluid systems, or machine design and materials — depending on the depth module you select. The PE Structural exam is among the most challenging PE disciplines, covering analysis and design of steel, concrete, wood, and masonry structures under vertical and lateral loads. It's a two-component exam (vertical forces and lateral forces) administered over 16 hours total.
Both PE exams require four years of progressive engineering experience under a licensed PE in most states.
The ARE (version 5.0) is required for architectural licensure in all U.S. jurisdictions. Administered by NCARB, it consists of six divisions: Practice Management, Project Management, Programming & Analysis, Project Planning & Design, Project Development & Documentation, and Construction & Evaluation. Each division is independent with multiple-choice and case study questions. Most candidates take the divisions over 1-3 years while completing the Architectural Experience Program (AXP).
The LARE (Landscape Architect Registration Examination) is administered by CLARB and required for landscape architecture licensure in most states. It consists of four sections covering project and construction management, inventory and analysis, design, and grading, drainage, and construction documentation. The LARE tests the ability to apply landscape architecture principles to protect public health, safety, and welfare.
The LEED Green Associate exam from GBCI tests foundational knowledge of green building principles and the LEED rating system. It's a 100-question, 2-hour exam covering integrative process, location, sustainable sites, water efficiency, energy, materials, and indoor environmental quality.
The LEED AP (Accredited Professional) credential goes deeper, with specialties in Building Design + Construction (BD+C), Operations + Maintenance (O+M), Interior Design + Construction (ID+C), and Neighborhood Development (ND). LEED AP exams require demonstrated project experience and test advanced knowledge of the LEED rating system within your chosen specialty.
The NCIDQ exam is the standard credential for professional interior designers in the U.S. and Canada. It consists of three sections: IDFX (Fundamentals), IDPX (Professional), and PRAC (Practicum). The exams cover building systems, codes, construction standards, design application, and professional practice.
For the FE, drill practice problems by topic and get familiar with the NCEES Reference Handbook. For PE exams, focus on depth-section preparation in your chosen sub-discipline. ARE candidates should tackle divisions strategically, starting with their strongest areas. LEED prep should center on the current LEED rating system and USGBC's reference guides.
Our platform offers targeted practice questions for each of these exams, with explanations grounded in the relevant codes, standards, and reference materials.
