Teacher certification exams verify that educators have the content knowledge, basic skills, and professional competency required to enter or advance in the profession. Requirements vary by state, but the exams covered here serve some of the largest educator populations in the country.
The CBEST measures basic proficiency in reading, mathematics, and writing. It's required for most teaching credential and many paraprofessional positions in California. Each section is scored on a scale of 20–80, with 41 as the passing score per section. You need a total of at least 123 across all three sections, with no individual section below 37. You can pass sections individually across multiple test dates.
The reading section tests comprehension and analysis of written passages. The math section covers estimation, measurement, statistical principles, and computation at a pre-algebra to basic algebra level. The writing section requires two essays: one expressive and one expository.
The CSET verifies subject-matter competence in the specific area you intend to teach. It's not a single exam — it's a family of exams covering subjects including English, Mathematics, Science, Social Science, Physical Education, Art, Music, and more. Each subject area has multiple subtests with multiple-choice and constructed-response items. Passing the CSET fulfills the subject-matter requirement for a Single Subject Teaching Credential in California.
The Praxis SLLA is required for principal and school administrator licensure in many states. It assesses the knowledge and skills needed for effective school leadership, including strategic leadership, instructional leadership, organizational leadership, and community engagement. The exam uses constructed-response questions that present realistic school leadership scenarios requiring written analysis and decision-making.
The SLLA is scenario-heavy — you'll be given detailed descriptions of school situations and asked to identify issues, propose solutions, and justify your reasoning based on best practices and ethical standards.
The Praxis SLP is required for licensure or certification as a speech-language pathologist in most states and by ASHA (American Speech-Language-Hearing Association). It covers speech sound production, fluency, language and cognition, acoustics, swallowing, professional practice, and research methodology. The exam includes selected-response questions and may include clinical simulation questions.
SLP candidates need strong knowledge across the full scope of practice — from pediatric articulation disorders to adult neurogenic communication disorders to dysphagia management.
For the CBEST, focus on time management during the writing section and review basic math concepts. For the CSET, review the official test specifications from the CTC — they outline exactly which content domains are tested. For the Praxis SLLA, practice writing structured responses to school leadership scenarios under timed conditions. For the Praxis SLP, review across the full scope of practice and focus on clinical application, not just textbook recall.
